The Biomedical Physics Interdepartmental Graduate Program offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in four specialty areas:

  • Molecular Imaging
  • Medical Imaging
  • Therapeutic Medical Physics
  • Radiation Biology

The program encourages applications from students interested in interdisciplinary research that may involve aspects of physics, biology, engineering, chemistry, mathematics and computer science.  While most applicants to our program have successfully completed at least a Bachelor’s degree from one of these disciplines, we do seek applicants who are interested in pursuing research that is often right at the interfaces of these disciplines

The Biomedical Physics Interdepartmental Graduate Program also offers postdoctoral training for qualified scholars.

A limited number of fellowships are available to those students selected for admission. These fellowships for entering students generally consist of a stipend, registration fees (and tuition, where applicable). These fellowships are very competitive and are awarded based upon the overall quality of the dossier, as well as the academic record. Applications and materials should be submitted by December 15th, in order to receive early consideration for admission and fellowships for the following Fall quarter. After completion of all Core courses, with a "B" grade or better, the majority of our students obtain research assistantships as a source of support for subsequent years.

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) bi-annually offers a two-year fellowship for graduate students. Eligibility requires that they place in the 700s in the Quantitative portion of the GRE, in the 70% percentile or better in the Physics Subject Area examination, and have an undergraduate GPA greater than 3.5. If the applicant receives a fellowship from AAPM, they must apply to a program that is accredited. UCLA is one such graduate program. For more information you may call the AAPM at (301) 209-3350 or visit their website, www.aapm.org.
